Don’t Make These 10 Common Travel Mistakes

You spent months researching and finally decided where you want to go on vacation.  You’re booking your flight after taking the time to thoroughly research your destination.  You’ve planned your trip itinerary and made hotel reservations.  Now just make sure that you don’t do these 10 things.

1.)  For long trips, don’t schedule your arrival in the afternoon.

You are most likely to have jet lag when you arrive at your destination. Some people swear by the red-eye.  Rather than arrive tired in the morning or afternoon, try to arrive in the evening so you can go right to sleep and not miss out on any sightseeing.

You just traveled thousands of miles so why eat at a Pret A Manger or a Le Pain when you can do that three miles from your house? Part of the fun of traveling is to experience new cultures which include sampling the local foods.

3.)  Forgetting to call your cellular carrier before your trip

A phone is a necessity when traveling, and we have all heard stories about friends who didn’t use wifi and were stuck with astronomically high bills when they arrive home.   Make sure you call and switch temporarily to the right plan to avoid this.  Also, make sure your phone is on airplane mode on the plane, as some phone plans don’t cover in-air data carriers.

4.)  Not having your destination and street address in their native language.

This way the cab driver or the locals can help you get around town easily. Don’t forget to grab some of the hotel’s business cards so getting back is easy.

Consider not wearing your watch or expensive jewelry in public and always be cognizant of people who are standing close to you. Always keep an eye on your valuables when you leave your hotel.

6.)  Trying to squeeze in too many sights in a day

Don’t try to see everything in one day. See the most important sights first.  Set priorities and realize that it’s quality over quantity when it comes to tourist sites.

7.)  Not learning to say a few phrases in other languages

Many locals really appreciate it when foreigners attempt to communicate in their language, even if it’s just a couple of words. Consider downloading a translation app for your phone.

8.)  Posting pictures from your vacation on social media sites while you are still away

If you do, you’re just advertising to strangers that you’re not home. It’s always safer to just wait until you get home to let people know about your great trip.

9.)  Not taking a day trip.

There are so many great things to see just a couple of hours outside the city or town where you’re staying.  Even if you are just visiting for a weekend, a one-day small group tour can be a really great way to relax and see the sights.

9.)  Drinking the Water

We all know this is an absolute must in some countries, but drinking tap water in any foreign country can cause an upset stomach. When in doubt, drink bottled water.
